About
A ritual, not another playlist.
I did not build Ember because I could not find a timer. I had too many tools.
For years I would work in 45-minute focus sessions with rain or focus music in my ears. Then I learned how much better I felt when I actually used the break to reset: draw for a few minutes, breathe, move, step away from the screen.
I also had small moments I used to get myself into the right headspace before work. A song. A reminder of what I was building. A minute to stop carrying the rest of my life into the next task.
At some point I realised I was using five different things to create one habit.
So I started building the thing I wanted to use myself.
What Ember does
Ember turns a focus block into four simple parts: Connect, Focus, Recover, Return.
Before the timer starts, you decide what the block is for and what you are not doing. During the block, Ember keeps the environment simple. When the timer ends, it guides a real break. Before you leave, you write down where you stopped so the next session has somewhere to begin.
That is it. No magical productivity state. No promise that the soundtrack is secretly doing your work.
What I promise, and what I do not
I care a lot about the research behind the ideas in Ember. I also care about not pretending the research proves more than it does.
So when the evidence is strong, I will say it is strong. When it is mixed, I will say mixed. When something in Ember is simply a product choice because it makes the ritual feel better to use, I will tell you that too.
Ember is not designed to diagnose or treat anything. The audio is not sold as a brain-rewiring technology. A ritual can make it easier to enter and leave the work. The work itself is still yours.
Who is behind it
I'm Malika Sani. I spent about fifteen years in accounting before I started building apps and documenting the process in public.
Ember came from a very practical question: how do I do meaningful work consistently without turning every productive day into mental exhaustion?
I use it because I need that answer too.
If you want the founder story, the experiments, the messy product decisions, and the “well, that did not work” moments, I share those on my own channels. This site stays focused on helping you do the work.
